Urinary Tract Infection Symptoms
Urinary tract infection symptoms of cystitis (bladder infection) are:
  • Frequent urgent and painful urination

  • Pain in the lower abdomen and back

  • Blood or pus in the urine

  • Chills

  • Fever
Symptoms of nephritis, which is an inflammation of one or both kidneys, may be nonexistent or they may include:
  • Frequent urge to urinate

  • Dark urine

  • Blood and/or albumin in the urine

  • Lower back or abdominal pain

  • Fatigue

  • Chills

  • Fever

  • Edema – swelling of the face, eyes or legs

  • Headaches

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Loss of appetite

  • Anemia or high blood pressure (in severe instances)
Nephritis usually only occurs during childhood or pregnancy. It can be caused by bacteria from a bowel movement getting into the urinary opening, due to wiping from back to front. Or it can start as an infection in various other areas of the body. Nephritis generally requires medical treatment and bed rest.
